What is a Backup
Backing up involves creating a copy of your critical data to prevent accidental data loss, corruption, and unauthorised access. In addition, having an up-to-date copy of your data helps to ensure that you can quickly recover from any of these events.
The effort you put into your backup strategy depends on the amount of pain, effort, and cost involved should you not have backup processes in place and an event occurs. I.e. if an application couldn’t be accessed or data couldn’t be retrieved.
3-2-1 Rule
Ideally, a backup solution should follow the 3-2-1 rule. i.e. three backup copies should be made using two different media. In addition, one copy should be made at an offsite location to prevent ransomware attacks and protect against theft, fire and floods, and natural disasters.
Testing the Backup
A testing process that checks the integrity of the backups should be done to ensure that the data can be restored. Documentation of these steps and any configuration needed should also be completed and reviewed. Remembering that during high-stress levels, staff can make errors, and simple procedures make these activities less painstaking and stressful for the people involved.
